  • Building a Culture of Caring and Respect - October 5, 2011, — Rapid City CHARACTER COUNTS! will host a bullying prevention training from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Sylvan I Room. Dr. Mark Britzman will present Building a Culture of Caring and Respect. Dr. Mark J. Britzman is a tenured professor in the Counseling and Human Resource Development Department at South Dakota State University. He is also a licensed psychologist, certified clinical mental health counselor, and National Trainer for CHARACTER COUNTS! program. Mark was recently chosen as one of sixteen professors internationally to become a William Glasser Scholar.


Rapid City CHARACTER COUNTS! participates and hosts many different projects which are designed to further enforce our belief that good character consists of knowing the good, desiring the good, and doing the good - habits of the mind, habits of the heart, and habits of action.

Examples of projects and events schools can do for local organizations and businesses:

Working Against Violence Inc. >>
  • Donate good/used children’s books and floor puzzles
  • Possibly make large floor pillows for children to lay on to read
  • Visit and read to the children/play games/put puzzles together/babysit, etc.
  • Put on a puppet show, make puppets for the kids so that they can participate in the puppet show (paper bag, glove, sock puppets, etc.)
  • Make cookies for the children
  • Make holiday treat bags for the children (Christmas/Easter/Valentines/etc.)
  • Make homemade play dough, and deliver to children
  • Print and make homemade color books to be given to the children
  • Call to find out if there are any other opportunities for help
Youth and Family Services >>
  • Volunteer at the Head Start Program
  • Read to the kids
  • Puppet show (make puppets for the kids)
  • Play/make play dough
  • Make holiday "treat bags" for the children
  • Send holiday cards to the children
  • Print and make homemade color books to be given to the children
  • Call for a “Volunteer need” appropriate for your class
  • Volunteer to help sponsor/run booths at the “Kids Fair”, take tickets etc.
  • Make things for their home outreach program
