Making an Impact Contest and Engaging Today's Youth for Tomorrow's Civic Leadership Symposium
We are excited to announce in celebration of the 20th anniversary (1992-2012) KVUSA is hosting a national contest titled, "Making an Impact". The contest will recognize 6th-12th grade students who are creating a positive impact on their community through a service learning or civic engagement project. The entries will be divided into two categories 6th-8th graders and 9th-12th graders and one winner from each category will be selected as grand prize winners. These winners will make a presentation about their project via Cisco's telepresence and webex technology in Washington D.C. at the "Engaging Today's Youth for Tomorrow's Civic Leadership" Symposium. Students, teachers and civic education advocates can watch the symposium and presentation and ask questions via the URL link that will provided at a later date. A detailed agenda for the symposium will be distributed soon.
The contest and symposium would not be possible without the help and support of our partners (Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, CIRCLE, League of Women Voters, Mikva Challenge, National Council for the Social Studies, and Rock the Vote).
Below are materials that you can share with your teachers and students!! Please share all of this information with them frequently. We will be sending you reminders that will contain specific facebook messages, twitter messages, email blast language etc. We hope that every affiliate will have students that enter the contest.
Also all the details about both the Making an Impact Contest and Engaging Today's Youth for Tomorrow's Civic Leadership Symposium can be found at www.kidsvotingusa.org/EYT2012.

The South Dakota Project Citizen State Showcase is held in Pierre, on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the King’s Inn & Convention Center. South Dakota Project Citizen is a national program provided through the Center for Civic Education and a South Dakota program of the Chiesman Center for Democracy. It is an issues centered curricular program that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. Students learn important civics and language arts content standards, including analysis of public policy, advocacy, research, writing, and presentation skills. Entire classes of students work cooperatively to identify an issue in their community. They then research the issue, evaluate alternative solutions, develop their own solution in the form of a public policy, and create a political action plan to enlist local or state authorities to adopt their proposed policy. Students develop a portfolio of their work and present their project in a public hearing showcase before a panel of civic-minded community
