The CHIESMAN CENTER FOR DEMOCRACY promotes and supports democratic principles and active civic engagement.
We seek approximately 20-30 student leaders to attend the 3-day youth congress held in July on the University of South Dakota campus in Vermillion, SD.

Students who would like to participate must complete the application and short essay questions. Once the applications are received and reviewed, students will be contacted about their participation in the Youth Congress.

Youth Congress Students should demonstrate one or more of the following leadership qualities:

  • Active within his or her community, school, or organization
  • Concern for South Dakota’s role in the global community
  • Excellent attitude about the role of youth in the future of South Dakota and the United States
  • Reliability and commitment to making a difference for their school, community, and state

Requirements for Youth Congress:

  • complete application and short essay questions
  • enrolled as a junior or senior in high school
  • provide their own transportation to the University of South Dakota campus
  • pay a $65 fee which includes lodging, food and materials
