The keynote speaker Dr. Edward Riley is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Behavioral Teratology at San Diego State University.

    • Spearfish High School wins the 2011 South Dakota State We the People Competition - Mitchell, SD – On December 16, students from across the state joined together for the 2011 South Dakota state We the People competition that was held at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. The three participating schools in this annual event were: St. Thomas More High School of Rapid City, Spearfish High School, and West Central High School in Hartford. Spearfish High School took top honors this year with West Central taking a close second place.

    • State Senator Opens Dialogue about Bullying - Rapid City, SD – On Tuesday, December 20, 2011 the Rapid City CHARCTER COUNTS! Coalition, hosted a meeting at the Chiesman Center for Democracy Inc., to inform the public about state bullying legislation with guest speaker Senator Stan Adelstein. Seventeen people representing the Rapid City school district, state legislature, youth serving organizations, and concerned citizens gave feedback on the ever increasing problem.

    • Johnson Names Newell Family as 2011 “Angels in Adoption” - Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today announced he has chosen Nora and Randy Boesem of Newell, South Dakota for recognition as “Angels in Adoption”. Johnson is a founding member of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption and chose the Boesems from nominees across South Dakota.

    • 2011 Black Hills Community Needs Assessment - A consortium of local organizations in the Black Hills commissioned the South Dakota Public Policy Institute, a project of the Chiesman Center for Democracy, to conduct a Community Needs Assessment study in the Black Hills area. Areas included in this assessment are Butte County, Lawrence County, Meade County, Fall River County, Custer County and Pennington County.

Eugene Hoyme is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota, Chief Medical Officer of Sanford Children’s Hospital and Senior Vice President for Children’s Services at Sanford Clinic in Sioux Falls.

The keynote speaker David Michael Boulding is a criminal/family lawyer from British Colombia, Canada who has authored and co-authored numerous papers and articles on FASD, such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and the Law: Some Practical Steps for Parents and Legal System Professionals

    Description: Kids Voting South Dakota Kickoff to the election-celebrating Kids Voting National Red, White and Blue Week the 3rd week in September. Grades 5th and 6th from active Kids Voting schools in the area will be invited to participate. The formal event will stress the importance of voting, citizenship, and being an active participant in the electoral process. South Dakota Secretary of State Chris Nelson will be the keynote speaker.
